Seasonal Products in Calabria: Celebrating Local Flavors with FoodCare

Calabria is a region in the South of italy well known for its agricultural richness and diverse

seasonal products that highlight the unique climate and terrain. From the fertile plains to the rolling hills, the seasonal harvests of Calabria offer a variety of flavors that connect deeply with the region’s culinary identity.

As part of the FoodCare project, we aim to explore and promote these seasonal treasures, focusing on their role in preserving cultural heritage and sustainable farming practices.

Throughout the year, Calabrian farmers produce an incredible selection of seasonal items: citrus fruits like bergamot and mandarins brighten up the winter months, while spring brings the arrival of wild asparagus, artichokes, and fava beans. In the summer, the land yields vibrant tomatoes, eggplants, and peppers, used in traditional recipes like peperonata and melanzane ripiene. Autumn is marked by the harvest of chestnuts, mushrooms, and the famous Cipolla Rossa di Tropea.

By choosing these seasonal products, we not only enjoy fresh, nutrient-rich food but also support local farmers and traditional agricultural methods that have been passed down for generations.

With the FoodCare project, we will delve deeper into how these products contribute to a sustainable food system and explore ways to integrate them into modern culinary practices.

Stay tuned as we share stories, recipes, and insights from local producers who keep these seasonal traditions alive!
