0 Km Food in Slovenia

0 Km Food in Slovenia

My name is Anja Franetič and I am a student at Šolski center Srečka Kosovela Sežana.

My school invited an expert, Karin Callipo, who told us about FOODCARE project, which focuses on the relation between FOOD & ENVIROMENT.

Among all DIDACTIC MATERIALS, I read the one on 0 Km Food and how it is related to the importance of eating local, fresh, and seasonal ingredients.
I was very interested in the Interactive Resource that invited me to know more I FEEL SLOVENIA, where I could read that Home-grown food tastes richer, and top chefs are well aware of this as they join the garden to table movement.

More in details, I read the one of my country “0 Km Food in Slovenia” and I learned that regional specialties such as Vipava cherries, Goriška peaches, and local wines show how diverse our country is. The material also explains that 0 Km food is not only about eating local products, but also about living well. It supports a slow-life approach where meals are shared, time is appreciated, and food becomes part of a balanced lifestyle. I learned that when we choose local food, we also protect traditions and enjoy healthier meals.

Why is it important?
It is important because fresh and seasonal ingredients help farmers and small producers survive. By choosing local food, we preserve Slovenian traditions and support cultural heritage. This kind of food also has a positive impact on our health. The article explains that 0 km food brings better quality, more freshness, and more nutrition. It also helps the environment because food does not travel long distances. The philosophy of 0 km food shows how food and life are connected, and how traditional Slovenian dishes represent our culture, history, and values.

How can we contribute?
We can contribute by choosing more local and seasonal food in our daily life. We can buy fruits and vegetables from local markets, support farmers, and try to cook more traditional  Slovenian meals, like štruklji or žganci. We can also spread awareness among my family and friends about why local food matters. By making small changes, We can help protect traditions, support local producers, and live in a more sustainable and environmentally friendly way.

FOODCARE project was really a surprise for me andI want to know more by reading about other topics during my free time.
