I' am Matija and I study at the Šolski center Srečka Kosovela Sežana in Slovenia and today, on the 20th November 2025, I had the opportunity to attend the presentation of a project called »Food Care«, that was presented to us by Karin Callipo.
The project is about how to consume local food that is more environmentally friendly and has a smaller carbon footprint. The project is Co-funded by the Erasmus+ Program of the European Union and is addressed to the younger audience. It's a project that is based on communication skills and has a learning concept.
I read the didactic material titled “0 Km Food in Calabria”. It explains what 0 km food in Calabria is and how much it is embedded in the Italian region. It explains what are the benefits of 0 km food and what can we do to adopt it.
I learned that Calabria has quite a long history of 0 km food thanks to the Slow Food movement that originated in the 1980s. It encourages to not only eat local products but also to live well.
This kind of food consumption is important because it preserves traditional recipes, helps boost the economic growth of the region but it also helps to reduce the carbon footprint of the food.
I think that many people could use this method of food consumption, but it depends on the individual’s tastes, location, purchasing power, … The market has also a big impact on the consumer’s choice, for example, some of the local supermarkets may not offer locally produced food.
I think that the presentation was quite interesting because we learned about the food-consuming habits of various parts of Europe. I think that everybody has a different opinion on the discussed topic. I also think that a lot of people and families in my area use local ingredients and seasonal food in their cuisine and value its quality.
